Baroness Hilary Armstrong, chair of the Independent Commission on Neighbourhoods (ICON), visited Liverpool last Friday, to speak with local residents and community volunteers about the changing landscape of their neighbourhood.

Baroness Armstrong was joined by Commissioner Matt Leach, and Observer to the Commissioner Stephen Aldridge -MHCLG, and members of the ICON Secretariat.

The team met with Liverpool City Region Mayor, Steve Rotherham, where they discussed how a neighbourhood-approach to policy making could benefit Liverpool’s mission critical neighbourhoods.

The next stop on the Commission’s visit was the L30 Big Local Area Community Centre. The resident-led community centre offers workshops, fitness classes, a food pantry, and provides a third space for local residents to build connections and trust within their community. The visit to the centre gave ICON the opportunity to see the long-term impact of community-led regeneration.

The group then visited the nearby St Mark’s Church, to see the projects residents and volunteers have been working on to strengthen community ties.

Thank you to all those who contributed to ICON’s visit.
