The Independent Commission on Neighbourhoods visited Stoke-on-Trent this month to see firsthand how Local Authorities and community groups have worked together to improve conditions in their neighbourhoods and build trust within the wider community.

Baroness Hilary Armstrong attended the visit along with Commissioner Matt Leach and Commission Observer Stephen Aldridge. The group met with fellow Commissioner and Chief Executive of Stoke-on-Trent City Council, Jon Rouse.

The day started with a trip to a Stay and Play Session, facilitated by the local church the session offers an opportunity for local parents to meet one another and a safe environment for their children to play.

The group then took part in discussions with community leaders and stakeholders to understand their experiences of community in Stoke. The discussions enabled ICON to learn how different interventions or support could benefit residents, and the most salient challenges in the area.

The group ended their visit with a trip to the Portland Inn Project, where they met with residents who had purchased houses in the area for £1. The project is helping to revive the local neighbourhood, with old and new residents coming together to build a trusting and positive environment for all to enjoy.

ICON is grateful to everyone who facilitated the visit to Stoke-on-Trent, with particular thanks to Councillor Jane Ashworth OBE, Angela Glithero and Vicki Gwynne.
